Are you suffering from painfully slow internet due to your Wi-Fi speeds not being entirely up to par? Slow internet is something that can be entirely frustrating. There is nothing worse than trying research or network and have to wait forever to get a page to load. Fortunately, there are some ways you may be able to remediate this issue.
When it comes to Wi-Fi speeds discussions, generally, it correlates to how fast you can load a YouTube video or send an email through your wireless router to the internet. Your Wi-Fi router has a top speed and so does your internet connection, so you need a Wi-Fi router that is at least as fast as your internet connection. For example, if your internet connection speed is 100mbps, then a Wi-Fi router with “Wireless N” technology will be ten times as fast.
If you are having signal issues, the first thing you should try is moving your Wi-Fi router to a more central location with fewer obstructions. Do not place your Wi-Fi router near anything metal such as a filing cabinet, or a brick wall. Find an excellent central location with the fewest obstructions to ensure your signal strength is the best it can be. The better the signal strength, the better your Wi-Fi speeds will be.
If moving your Wi-Fi router does not solve signal strength issues, then it is time to upgrade your router to a model with a better range. Many routers tout new technologies that substantially increase range and will advertise how far the signal will go unobstructed. The best bet is to get one with more coverage than you need to ensure the signal strength is the best it can be in all rooms.
Some setups have many obstructions such as brick or concrete walls, metal roofs, etc. In these situations, a wireless repeater may be necessary. Wireless repeaters take your Wi-Fi router’s signal and repeat it at full strength. An example situation would be your current Wi-Fi router, only covering 70% of your large two-story house. You would place the repeater somewhere within the range of the Wi-Fi router, where it would then take the signal and repeat it at full strength to the rest of your house.
Even if you have an optimal Wi-Fi router setup, your laptops and cell phones may not have comparable wireless transmitters. For instance, if your Wi-Fi router has wireless AC speeds, but your laptop has older Wireless G speeds, it is time to upgrade your laptop to one with wireless AC capabilities. If all of your devices are capable of matching the speeds of your Wi-Fi router, you know you can utilize the full potential of your setup.
